The Space Classroom News
The past year has gone by very quickly for Leyla and myself, along with many adventures and challenges life has brought us. We set up The Ceramics Space with a vision of creating a pottery community who want to immerse themselves in all things ceramics. With this in mind we created the studio space and the handbuilding classroom.
Now I would be lying if I didn’t tell you the classroom is a very special place for me. I am an avid fan of handbuilding and often feel that in the ceramics world it can be thought of as the poor relation. I think anyone who has an interest in pottery should have the experience of handbuilding. It will open your world to understanding just how wonderfully versatile working with clay can be; the possibilities are endless. You learn a deeper understanding of the materials, how far you can push clay, experimenting, discovering new possibilities, inspiring your own creativity and confidence when working with clay. It gives you such great opportunities to develop surface decoration techniques and exploring the use of colour. Your handbuilding journey can take you from making a beautiful simple form such as a delicate pinch pot, through to beautiful large coiled pots, slab boxes, sculptural forms, functional pieces, altered shapes and more complex builds combining hand built pieces with thrown sections; it makes me feel so excited just thinking about it. So stepping into that classroom is like opening a new door up into your clay journey, come on in and try it!
